A.M.I. PRIMARY TEACHER TRAINING PROGRAMME COURSE CONTENT

LECTURES by A.M.I. trainers on Montessori philosophy and practice of education.

PRESENTATION & DISCUSSION of the Montessori auto-didactic materials: Practical Life, Sensorial, Language, Math, Music, and Extensions.

SUPERVISED PRACTICE with the materials under guidance of qualified staff.

OBSERVATION in A.M.I. classes.

PRACTICE TEACHING in A.M.I. classes under supervision of the trainers.

PREREQUISITES

A Bachelor’s Degree, or an ECE Diploma with minimum two year’s experience, or equivalent.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND CONDITIONS FOR CERTIFICATION

Ninety percent (90%) attendance at theory lectures and material demonstrations in each area of the curriculum.

Supervised practicals as scheduled.

Observation as scheduled.

Practice teaching as scheduled in classes approved by the Centre.

Submission of albums in all required areas of the curriculum, complete and correct, on dates indicated on the schedule.

Preparation of materials as required.

Successful completion of two written examination papers: theory and practical.

Successful completion of oral examinations in all areas of the curriculum.

Admission to the training course does not guarantee certification.

Students failing any part of the course examination, written or oral, must retake that part of the examination the following year, after complying with recommendations made by the A.M.I. Board of Examiners.

DISMISSAL

Students are expected to abide by the conditions set and arrangements made for their training during the course. Students may be asked to discontinue their course of study for academic or other cogent reasons.

COURSE CALENDAR

The course lasts one academic year from September through May with two weeks holiday in December and two weeks in March. Before the December holiday, individual student conferences are held. Written examinations take place in March, orals at the end of the academic year. These are conducted by two or more examiners, one of whom is an official representative of the A.M.I.

FOREIGN STUDENTS

The Foundation for Montessori Education accepts applications from international students. Those who hold a degree from a University outside of Canada, must have their degree assessed by an academic credentials evaluation service, or a recognized Canadian University, and submit the assessment along with their application.

The course is conducted in English at a university level. Applicants who have English as a second language are responsible for ensuring their language proficiency is at a minimum TOEFL score of 220 computer-based.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

Some financial assistance may be available to those who qualify.

INFORMATION SESSIONS

Information sessions will be held on the first Tuesday of each month from October to May. The only exception will be January, when the session will be held on January 8th.

Information sessions will be from 7:00 - 8:00 pm and will include a brief presentation followed by a question and answer period. We will then provide an opportunity to speak individually with staff members, as well as some past and/or current students. We look forward to meeting you.
